Key Concepts & Terminology

Key Concepts & Terminology

1. Introduction

To get the most out of Daily Standup Governance for Jira, it is important to understand the specific terminology used within the application. This platform differentiates between standard Jira activities and specialized governance signals.

2. Core Entities

Term

Definition

Standup Submission

A daily record created by a team member containing their progress, plans, blockers, and sentiment.

Blocker

A specific impediment raised during a standup that prevents a team member from completing a task.

Facilitator

A designated user responsible for reviewing team health, resolving blockers, and managing daily flow.

Governance

The framework of rules and transparency that ensures data integrity (e.g., submission immutability).

3. Governance & Workflow Terms

Immutable Submissions for better governance

Once a user clicks "Send Status" or “Skipped“ on their daily standup, the record is locked. It cannot be edited or deleted. This ensures that the historical record of a sprint remains an accurate reflection of "truth at that moment," which is critical for honest Retrospectives.

Submission Window

A configurable time range (e.g., 08:00 AM – 11:00 AM) during which standup submissions are accepted for a specific board, based on the mutual understanding between the facilitator and team.

Blocker Lifecycle

  • Open: The blocker is active and needs attention.

  • Resolved: The facilitator or owner has cleared the impediment and added resolution notes.

4. Analytics & Signal Terms

The platform uses a Dual-Signal approach to monitor team health:

  • Hard Signals: Quantitative data pulled directly from Jira’s APIs (e.g., Cycle Time, Scope Creep, Commitment vs. Completion).

  • Soft Signals: Qualitative data derived from user input (e.g., Mood distribution, Participation rates, Blocker severity).

  • Signal Levels:

    • 🟢 Green (Stable): Normal operation; no intervention needed.

    • 🟡 Yellow (At-Risk): Minor deviations; monitor closely.

    • 🔴 Red (Needs Attention): Significant issues requiring immediate facilitator intervention.
